The Shire owns and manages the Southern Cross aerodrome in accordance with Civil Aviation Safety Authority requirements.

The Southern Cross Aerodrome is located approximately 3 kilometres East of Southern Cross along the Great Eastern Highway.

The aerodrome has previously been used for fly in fly out mining operations. Its current use is predominantly recreation (Southern Cross Aero Club) and for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Southern Cross is a Registered Airstrip consisting of the following:

Terminal with toilets, hanger shed (five bays), ambulance shed, two runways – (14/32 and 09/27), sealed taxiway and sealed apron area with low intensity lighting.

Runway 14/32 is 1,405 metres in length with a gravel surface. The turning nodes/thresholds (two hundred metres) either end of runway 14/32 are sealed. Runway 14/32 has low intensity runway lighting for emergency landing only (RFDS). The lighting can be pilot activated.

Runway 09/27 is 1,325 metres in length with a gravel surface without lighting.

The Southern Cross Cemetery is located on Beaton Road, at the northern end of the Southern Cross townsite. The original Southern Cross Cemetery (pictured) is located on the east side of town, on the Great Eastern Highway.

community centreCommunity Centre

The Southern Cross Community Centre is located on Antares Street, Southern Cross. The building was re-developed during the 1990. It contains of a foyer, industrial kitchen and main hall with large stage and dressing rooms. The venue is used for various Shire functions throughout the year and can be hired for functions by the public.

Dog ParkDog park

Come and exercise your four legged companion at our Dog Park, featuring a fully fenced and gated obstacle course with agility and exercise equipment, a water fountain with dog drinking bowl and bench seating.

The park is located at the corner of Achernar and Sirius Street, next to the RV Point, with plenty of parking.

Recreation Centrerec centre

The Southern Cross Recreation Centre is located on Spica Street and has the following facilities:

  • Complex Lounge area
  • Bar facilities
  • Indoor Basketball court
  • Change rooms
  • Kitchen facilities

The sporting ground also has a skate park, 4 outdoor Netball courts, children’s playground and a football field. The Complex Lounge is available for hire for meetings and functions, please click here to view the fees and charges. To make a booking please contact the Shire administration office.

Senior Citizen’s Centre

The Senior Citizen Centre is located on Achernar Street, next to the Shire administration, in Southern Cross.

Throughout the week there are activities residents can participate in, such as arts and craft, exercises, carpet bowls and singing.

A visiting podiatrist uses a room in the Senior Citizen Centre for their regular consultation visits to Southern Cross, see Health for more information.

The Senior Citizen Centre is also the home to the local CWA group, which meets regularly on Tuesday nights for patch working. Please contact Judy Guerini for further information, Ph: 9049 1283.

Southern Cross Skate Park

Skate Park overview

The Southern Cross Skate Park was completed and opened officially to the public late 2021 at the Constellation Park on Antares Street in Southern Cross.

Please ensure:

  • you respect the skate park, other riders, neighbouring residents and other users of Constellation Park;
  • you wear protective clothing;
  • you do not use the skate park if anything is damaged or broken, and report any damage or misuse to the Shire of Yilgarn immediately;
  • that children must be supervised at all times.

The Shire of Yilgarn accepts no responsibility for any loss, damage or injury incurred as a result of using this facility. Safety is our concern but is your responsibility.

Train Station

Southern Cross is serviced by TransWA’s “Prospector” train on a daily basis.

To book a train ticket contact TransWA directly on 1300 6622 05, book online following this link www.transwa.wa.gov.au or book a ticket at the Shire of Yilgarn administration office during business hours.

Please note that the train only stops for pre-booked passengers.

The train station is located 2km north outside of town, on Beaton Road. When planning a visit to Southern Cross please arrange someone to pick you up on arrival as there are no bus services or taxis.
